NEWS: iTunes Hit 100 Millionth Download

After just over 14 months of existence, Apple's iTunes Music Store recently celebrated its 100 millionth download. Apple touted the feat as a major landmark for online music, though it missed its publicly stated goal of hitting 100 million sales within a year. Leading up to the milestone, the company was running a contest that awarded iTunes customers with free Apple products. The company gave away 50 new iPods. Kevin Britten of Kansas, who downloaded the 100 millionth song, received a free 17" Apple PowerBook, a 40GB iPod, and a gift certificate that will let him download 10,000 free iTunes songs. What song marked the major milestone? Kevin downloaded "Somersault (Dangermouse remix)" by Zero7. Never heard of it? Neither have we, but we're happy Kevin had a chance to purchase the track legally rather than download it from one of those dubious file-trading networks people are using today. Illegal music downloads still outpace legal music downloads by an astronomical number, however, and some studies say that illegal downloads still outpace legal downloads by over 100-to-1
