1. COMMENTARY

(contributed by Bob Muir, [email protected])

  • MAIL CALL

  • What all organizations require in addition to basic file-server support is email support. When email goes down, even for a short period, everyone in an organization is affected. Therefore, I highly recommend that students and IT professionals concentrating on Microsoft products tackle Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 5.5 after studying Windows Server and Windows Professional products. Exchange not only increases your overall familiarity with Active Directory (AD) and Windows services, it also forces a deeper understanding of antivirus and backup products and greatly increases your employability.

The place to start is the Microsoft Exchange Server Web site. At this site, you'll find white papers, instructions, marketing materials, security resources, and extremely useful trial software.
    http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/default.asp

The requirements for a solid home lab are a bit more strenuous for Exchange than for other products. As a minimum, you need a machine capable of running Windows 2000 and Exchange 2000 plus at least one other computer to act as a client. A more effective setup would include two server-capable machines for multisite practice, two clients, and a static IP address with a registered DNS domain name attached. Vmware's VMware Workstation is virtual-machine software that can help you with hardware challenges; a dynamic DNS service will help you resolve most static IP deficiencies.
    http://www.vmware.com/products/desktop/ws_features.html

A dynamic DNS service lets you link a real DNS domain name to your Internet connection, even when your connection isn't an always-on static IP connection. By installing a small client on your computer that periodically sends in the current IP address, the service maintains the connection between your DNS name and your constantly changing dynamic IP address. This service is handy for email, Web sites, FTP services, or practice. Search Google for "dynamic dns service" to find a plethora of candidates.

If companies are dependent upon anything, it's email. Make sure your expertise is up to the challenge.

    2. FEATURED THREADS

  • REGISTRY QUESTIONS

  • \[brian_d_fink\] is concerned about the nitpicky exam questions about the registry. How do you prepare for them without memorizing every registry entry? See this thread for some answers.

  • PLUG N PREY

  • Rights under Windows XP and Windows 2000 can be confusing. In this thread, \[JimB\] helps \[GaryEng\] understand the required rights for installing Plug and Play (PnP) hardware.
    http://certtutor.net/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=14&threadid=33971
  • CRASHED

  • \[csokai\]'s laptop no longer boots into Windows, and a reinstallation has failed. Fortunately, \[GaryEng\], \[Mohareb\], and have some suggestions.

  • TIME FOR NETBIOS TO DISAPPEAR?

  • Although we're gradually moving away from this archaic naming system, many services still require NetBIOS to function. See this thread for a discussion about WINS and NetBIOS.
    http://certtutor.net/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=16&threadid=34057
  • AD AND SQL SERVER—A TEAM?

  • In this thread, Tutor provides surprising advice about the technologies that we'll need to embrace in the coming years.
    http://certtutor.net/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=55&threadid=33928
  • NETWORK+ PREPARATION

  • The Computing Technology Industry Association's (CompTIA's) Network+ is one of the most important entry-level certifications you can earn. This thread provides some excellent advice about resources to turn to if you decide to pursue this certification.
    http://certtutor.net/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=73&threadid=33337
  • PROMOTIONS TO THE SERVER ROOM

  • Servers are fascinating. But how do you land a position that lets you work with servers when the people hiring for the position want only experienced applicants for the job? and others have some great advice to help you face this catch-22.

    5. TIP OF THE WEEK

  • AUTOMATIC MOUSE POINTER

  • An often-overlooked productivity enhancement is the Microsoft IntelliMouse software's "snap-to" feature. The snap-to feature automatically positions the mouse pointer on any highlighted button on dialog boxes. This feature is included with Windows XP and Windows 2000 (see the Control Panel Mouse applet). Windows 9x must find the IntelliMouse utility elsewhere—either with a new Microsoft mouse or by searching the Microsoft Web site.
