==== 1. Ask the Experts: Retrieving Missing Files from a CD-ROM ====
by Bob Chronister, [email protected]

Q: I've been asked to help restore files that were on a CD-ROM at one time but that don't appear to be there anymore. This CDROM contains the only copy of about one year of scientific studies. Is there any way to find these files? The CD-ROM is in read/write format.

A: Some time ago, I faced a similar problem when someone asked me to recover a CD-ROM that contained a year's worth of research data. The solution depends on the cause of the problem. If the files are corrupt, you can't retrieve them. In this case, too many files had been placed on the CD-ROM, and they started overwriting the data. I used an application called CDRoller (, which worked well. The application read the CD-ROM, and I was able to retrieve about 80 percent of the files by copying the files to a local drive on the computer. CDRoller can retrieve data files, auditory files, and photo and video clip files. The small shareware fee for the application, which is necessary for data recovery, was well worth it because I was able to save almost the full year of experimentation data. Why folks don't keep multiple copies of such data is beyond my understanding. You can easily store data on a USB memory stick or even on a hard disk, then copy it to a CDROM if you so desire. Backups are essential in my opinion, especially if you can't afford to lose the data.

Network Appliance Presents New SMB Division
by Blake Eno, [email protected]

Small-to-midsized businesses (SMBs) face a number of challenges created by budget, staff, and knowledge limitations. In no area is this more apparent than the storage realm. SMBs' storage decisions must take into account ever-increasing amounts of data as well as various storage technologies such as NAS and SAN. I learned that storage vendor Network Appliance has made a huge commitment to help SMB customers, in a recent conversation with Sajai Krishnan, general manager of NetApp's StoreVault division ( ). "The new StoreVault division was created with the SMB customer in mind," Krishnan explained. "And because we've typically focused on enterprise customers, almost ninety percent of the StoreVault division staff was brought from the outside to help better serve our new customers."

Krishnan says that NetApp created StoreVault for IT generalists--people who work on all aspects of IT. "With the introduction of the StoreVault S500 appliance, new technologies--iSCSI SAN and NAS--are wrapped into one platform scaling from 1TB to 6TB and can be set up with no previous knowledge." According to Krishnan, a Fibre Channel SAN add-on kit for the StoreVault S500 will be available in third quarter 2006. The StoreVault S500, which was announced just three weeks ago, also ships with Data ONTAP StoreVault Edition software, NetApp's built-in storage OS that includes a number of data-protection features.

Mimosa Systems Adds Disaster Recovery Solution

Mimosa Systems announced the NearPoint Disaster Recovery Option for its unified management solution, Mimosa NearPoint for Microsoft Exchange Server. During an Exchange Server recovery, the Disaster Recovery Option restores Exchange data, rebinds mailboxes, and re-establishes Exchange services. In addition, the Exchange recovery process preserves the consistency and integrity of Exchange data and ensures a corruption-free copy of Exchange databases. The Disaster Recovery Option also features an off-host architecture that requires no agents or kernel driver software, which could cause instability or compete for CPU, memory, and storage resources. Idealstor announced Ibac 4.0, which now includes continuous data protection, backup, and disaster recovery capabilities for removable hard drives all in one solution. The product lets you recover and restore lost or corrupted data from any point in time and provides the ability to continuously backup systems at a byte level. Ibac separates backup and continuous backup into individual modules for increased flexibility and lets you back up open files and databases such as Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft SQL Server, without using remote agents. Because Ibac works with ejectable disk media, you can remove backups to an offsite storage location. For more information, visit Idealstor on the Web:
