JSI Tip 6487. Windows XP skips the 'Welcome' screen and automatically displays a desktop after you upgrade from Windows 2000?

After you upgrade from Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional bypasses the Welcome screen and logs you on without requiring a username and password?

When you create a new user account, you are NOT offered any method to log on as the new user.

If Windows 2000 was configured for automatic logon, Windows XP inherits those settings.

To turn off automatic logon:

1. Start / Run / control userpasswords2 / OK.

2. On the Users tab, check the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer box.

3. Press Apply and OK.

4. Log off.

5. Log on as the new account.

NOTE: This behavior will NOT occur if the computer is a domain member.
