Microsoft Beefs Up DLP in SharePoint Server 2016 IT Preview

SharePoint Server 2016 IT Preview enables companies to protect a wide range of sensitive information types.

Microsoft has boosted the data loss prevention capabilities in SharePoint Server 2016 IT Preview, including new support for sensitive information types.

According to a blog post by Microsoft's Bill Baer, SharePoint senior product marketing manager, one of the key improvements to eDiscovery in SharePoint Server is the introduction of Sensitive Information Types.

"In SharePoint Server 2016 IT Preview Data Loss Prevention is now built into Enterprise Search," wrote Baer in the post. "It allows you to search for sensitive content in your existing eDiscovery Center, keeping content in place and enabling you to search in real time."

SharePoint Server 2016 IT Preview enables companies to protect a wide range of sensitive information types by looking for specific patterns (including keywords and checksums), including:

  • Credit card numbers
  • Social Security numbers
  • Bank account numbers

SharePoint Server 2016 IT Preview also leverages native confidence level and proximity logic to identify sensitive information. Once such information is identified, additional protective actions can be taken against the content.

Check out Baer's post for a specific example of how the feature works with Social Security numbers.
