2 Microsoft Updates Released: July 2014 CU for SharePoint 2013 and July 2014 Office PU

What's the difference between a CU and a PU?

Microsoft released the SharePoint 2013 July 2014 Cumulative Update (CU) and the Office Public Updates (PU) on July 8, 2014.

What is the difference between a CU and a PU? (Cue laughter of non-IT people who don’t have to deal with Microsoft’s naming system and acronym system.)

It can drive you a little nuts trying to figure out the differences between updates sometimes. “A CU can contain more than a PU. PU usually contains security fixes and other important fixes while a CU contains all fixes for the specific product,” writes Stefan Gossner, Senior Escalation Engineer for SharePoint (WSS, SPS, MOSS, SP2010) and MCMS.

So if you’re looking for a cumulative update for SharePoint 2013, check out item #1 below. If you’re looking for public updates of SharePoint 2013, or for other Office-related updates, check out item #2 below.

#1: SharePoint 2013 CU for July 2014

SharePoint 2013 Cumulative Update (CU) for July 2014 has been released. Microsoft is releasing CUs every month now, reports Microsoft’s Stefan Gossner.

Previously they were released every other month.

He adds “all updates for SharePoint 2013 require SharePoint Server 2013 SP1 OR March 2013 PU for SharePoint 2013 to be installed first.”

See Gossner’s blog post for more information and for links to downloads.

#2: July 2014 Office Updates Release

Microsoft announced the July 2014 Office Public Update releases. None of the 36 updates were for security. The updates ranged from Microsoft Office 2013 updates to Excel/Office 2003 updates to Office 2007 updates, to SharePoint 2010 updates, to SharePoint 2013 updates (not CUs), and many more.

See the TechNet Office Updates blog for more.
