==== FAQs ====
Q. How can I stream media to my Xbox 360 from my Windows XP machine?
A. The Xbox 360 has Windows Media Extender technology built-in, which means it can read music, pictures, video and even television from your Windows Media Center 2005 PC or music and pictures from a regular XP (Professional Edition or Home Edition) Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later machine. To stream media from a Windows Media Center 2005 PC to a Xbox 360 you must install the Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, which is available via http://www.windowsupdate.com . You can find more information about the rollup at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/upgrade/rollup2.mspx. Regular XP SP2 users need to install the Windows Media Connect 2.0 software, which is available at the Windows Update site under Optional Software or you can download it at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=e93a0ba1-1206-4df5-a3e7-f076691261ef&displaylang=en. Xbox 360 owners can go to http://www.xbox.com/en-US/pcsetup/ for an Xbox-focused setup routine, which provides a front end and additional logic for the standard Windows Media Connect (wmcsetup.exe) installation and performs additional configuration for Windows Media Center 2005 machines. After you install Windows Media Connect, you configure it via the Windows Media Connect Control Panel as the figure at http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/images/mediaconnectsetup.gif shows. On the Xbox 360, you manage connections to computers via its System main menu as the figure at http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/images/xbox360conxppc1.JPG shows. You then can play music and images by selecting the Computer as the source. If you connect the Xbox 360 to a Windows Media Center 2005 PC, you get a richer environment, including video streaming and album information as the figure at http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/images/xbox360mcecon.JPG shows. The Windows Firewall software will open the required ports during the installation of the Windows Media Connect software. However, if you use a different firewall be sure to open these ports: TCP - 2869, 10243 UDP - 1900, 10280, 10281, 10282, 10283, 10284
Windows Media Connect can communicate with other Digital Media Receivers in your environment--not just the Xbox 360. You can find more information about Windows Media Connect at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/devices/wmconnect/default.aspx.
Q. Can I upgrade Windows XP to Windows Media Center 2005?
A. Yes. Insert the Windows Media Center 2005 media and select the option to Upgrade. However, the preferred approach is to perform a clean installation.
-------------------- Q. What is the SyncToy 1.0 for Windows XP PowerToy?
A. Microsoft has released SyncToy 1.0, which allows synchronization between folders. You can download the application at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E0FC1154-C975-4814-9649-CCE41AF06EB7&displaylang=en . After you install SyncToy, execute it via the SyncToy shortcut on the Start menu. You specify pairs of folders by clicking the Create New Folder Pair button, which will prompt you to select the left and right folder, as the figure at http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/images/synctoy1.gif shows. Click the left and right computer pictures to change the focus for the Browse button. After you select the folders click Next, then choose the method of synchronization, as the figure at http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/images/synctoy2.gif shows. Here's a list of the synchronization options: - Synchronize. New and updated files are copied both ways. Renames and deletes on either side are replicated to the other. - Echo. New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames and deletes on the left are replicated to the right. - Subscribe. Updated files on the right are copied to the left if the file already exists on the left. - Contribute. New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames on the left are replicated to the right, but deletions aren't replicated. - Combine. New and updated files are copied both ways. No actions are taken for renamed or deleted files.
You'll be prompted to enter a name for the folder. Click Finish. After you configure the folders, you can preview the actions that will be performed by clicking the Preview All button (if viewing the "All Folder Pairs"), or click Run All to perform the configured sync tasks, as the figure at http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/images/synctoy3.gif shows.
-------------------- Q. What virtual instance licenses are included with Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition?
A. Microsoft has made some changes to licensing with Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition. If you purchase Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition, you can also run four virtual instances of the server software inside Virtual Server 2005 R2 for no additional cost. Also, it's four running instances; you could have 50 virtual instances but can have only four running at any one time unless you want to incur additional licensing costs. You can find more information in the Microsoft Virtualization_brief.doc document (http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/8/9/68964284-864d-4a6d-aed9-f2c1f8f23e14/virtualization_brief.doc ). The exact verbiage about the licensing changes is: "Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition - Each software license allows you to run, at any one time, one instance of the server software in a physical OS environment and up to four instances of the server software in virtual OS environments on a particular server." This is a change from the current licensing scheme, in which you pay for every installation whether running or not and is Microsoft's move toward a more virtualized environment. --------------------
Q. Why do I receive errors reading the cyclad-z.inf and cyclom-y.inf files during an OS installation?
A. The error is caused by creating a custom installation CD-ROM and burning the CD-ROM using ISO-9660 format instead of Joliet format, which allows the hyphen (–) character. In the future, make sure you use Joilet format to burn the CD-ROM and not DOS/ISO-9660.
