Why can't I map a drive via its IP address?

A. When you try to map a drive via an IP address, you might receive the following error message:

System error 53 has occurred.<br>

This error occurs when you try to map a drive to a server running one of the following applications:
  • IBM OS/2 1.3
  • LAN Manager 2.2
  • Microsoft Net Server 1.11
  • Hewlett-Packard UNIX LAN Manager X

To resolve this problem, use the server's NetBIOS name to map the drive:

  1. Start Windows Explorer.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Map Network Drive.
  3. In the Drive box, click the drive letter you want to use.
  4. In the Folder box, type

    \\\[server\]\\[share\]<br>

where \[server\] is the NetBIOS name of the server to which you want to connect and \[share\] is the name of a shared folder on that server.
  5. Click Finish.
