Contact: Microsoft * 800-426-9400 Web: http://www.microsoft.com Summary Pros: Most powerful version of Windows XP yet; includes a full-featured Media Center environment and cool new additions Cons: Loses a few XP Professional Edition features; not widely available as an upgrade Rating: 4 out of 5 Recommendation: Windows XP Media Center Edition (XP MCE) 2005 is, possibly, the ultimate version of XP, even though it loses a few key XP Pro features, including Group Policy support and some Stored User Names and Passwords functionality. XP MCE 2005 is generally available only with new Media Center PCs and isn't widely available as an upgrade (unless you own an earlier Media Center version and your PC maker offers the upgrade separately). Overall, however, XP MCE is more stable, more feature-laden, and better looking than any earlier XP version. Windows Media Player 10 Mobile |
Contact: Microsoft * 800-426-9400 Web: http://www.microsoft.com Summary Pros: Full-featured media player with playlist and media library support Cons: Usually ships only with new Pocket PCs; isn't available as a free download; doesn't include native photo slide show or image-viewing support Rating: 4 out of 5 Recommendation: Windows Media Player (WMP) 10 Mobile would get five stars if Microsoft would simply offer the product as a free upgrade for Windows Mobile—based Pocket PCs and Smartphones running Windows Mobile 2003 or later. Instead, the company provides the software only with new Pocket PCs. That's a shame because the excellent WMP 10 Mobile offers support for desktop autosync, media libraries, and other advanced features.
