JSI Tip 8441. How do I configure the Pop-up Blocker in Internet Explorer?

The new Pop-up Blocker feature in Internet Explorer, which is on by default, blocks most unwanted automatic and background pop-up windows from appearing.

NOTE: Pop-up windows that you manually open are NOT blocked.

If the Pop-up Blocker is turned off, you can turn it on when it prompts you before the first pop-up window appears, from the Tools menu, by pressing Pop-up Blocker and Turn On Pop-up Blocker, and from the Tools menu, by pressing Internet Options, the Privacy tab, and checking the Block pop-ups box.

You can allow pop-up windows to open in a Web site by adding the Web site to the Allowed sites list:

NOTE: Since Trusted sites and Local intranet Web content zones are considered safe, their pop-ups are NOT blocked by default.

1. On the Internet Explorer Tools menu, press Pop-up Blocker and Pop-up Blocker Settings.

2. In the Address of Web site to allow box, type the address of the Web site and press Add.

3. Press Close.

To block all pop-up windows, including those that a user opens:

1. On the Internet Explorer Tools menu, press Pop-up Blocker and Pop-up Blocker Settings.

2. In the Filter Level list, select High: Block all pop-ups \[Ctrl to override\].

3. Press Close.

NOTE: To open a pop-up window, even though the filter level is set to High: Block all pop-ups \[Ctrl to override\], hold down the CTRL key while you open the pop-up window.

To cause Pop-up Blocker to play a sound when it blocks a pop-up:

1. On the Internet Explorer Tools menu, press Pop-up Blocker and Pop-up Blocker Settings.

2. Check the Play a sound when a pop-up is blocked box.

3. Press Close.

To block pop-ups on Trusted sites and Local intranet Web content zones:

01. On the Internet Explorer Tools menu, press Internet Options.

02. Select the Security tab.

03. In the Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings box, select Local intranet.

04. Press Custom Level.

05. Under Use Pop-up Blocker, select Enable.

06. Press OK and OK.

07. Select the Security tab.

08. In the Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings box, select Trusted sites.

09. Press Custom Level.

10. Under Use Pop-up Blocker, select Enable.

11. Press OK and OK.

NOTE: See Description of the Internet Explorer Information Bar in Windows XP Service Pack 2.
