JSI Tip 7868. Changes that you make to environment variables do not affect services that run under the Local System account until you restart Windows 2000?

When you update or add environment variables, you must restart Windows 2000 Server computers before these changes affect services that run in the Local System account context.

Services that run in the Local System account context inherit their environment from the Services.exe process, which receives its' environment settings for the Local System account when Windows 2000 starts.

NOTE: Services.exe does NOT use the normal Windows Messaging procedure to receive indication that a value has changed, and does NOT update its' environment settings.

NOTE: See HOW TO: Create System Variables in Windows 2000.
