When you move an object to a different folder on the same volume, the original permissions are preserved. In all other cases of copying or moving, the object inherits permissions from the new parent folder.
NOTE: Only NTFS volumes record file system ACEs (Access Control Entries). FAT32 volumes cannot manage permissions.
NOTE: XCopy with the /O or /X switch will add an objects permissions to the inheritable permissions it receives from the parent object.
NOTE: Robocopy can preserve an objects permissions without adding the inheritable permissions from the parent folder.
To configure Windows 2000 to preserve the original permissions when an object is copied or moved to a new NTFS volume:
1. Use the Registry Editor to navigate to:
2. Add Value Name ForceCopyAclwithFile, a REG_DWORD data type, and set the data value to 1.
3. Log off and log back on for this setting to take effect.
