JSI Tip 4977. How do I configure NetBIOS scopes?

To configure the NetBIOS scope on a Windows 2000 computer:

1. Use Regedt32 to navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters.

2. On the Edit menu, Add Value name ScopeID, using the exact case. ScopeID is string (REG_SZ) data type.

3. Enter the scope and press OK.

4. Shutdown and restart your computer.

NOTE: DHCP clients should open a CMD prompt and type:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

NOTE: Microsoft discourages the use of NetBIOS scopes. They should only be used when no alternatives, such as VLANs, IPSeC, and restrictive permissions, exist. Microsoft is likely to drop support for NetBIOS scopes in future products.
