JSI Tip 3966. Internet Explorer appears to hang when started?

When you start IE 5.x or greater, the browser may appear to hang. The animated globe may continue to spin and you may receive the following message in the status bar:

Detecting proxy settings...

Internet Explorer is trying to locate a proxy server. Proxy Auto-Discovery is enabled. If your computer is on a network, the DHCP server does NOT include Web Proxy Auto-Discovery (WPAD) information in its, DHCP packets.

To resolve the issue, disable Proxy Auto-Discovery:

Connect to Internet Using Dial-Up Networking

1. Control Panel / Internet Options.

2. Select the Connection tab.

3. Select the appropriate connection.

4. Press Settings.

5. Clear the Automatically detect settings check box.

6. Press OK and OK.

Connect to Internet Using Local Area Network (LAN)

1. Control Panel / Internet Options.

2. Select the Connection tab.

3. Select the LAN Settings.

4. Clear the Automatically detect settings check box.

5. Press OK and OK.

Restart your computer.
