JSI Tip 3602. Windows 2000 profile error when logging on over a slow link?

When a user with a roaming profile logs on to a domain over a slow link, they may receive an error concerning their roaming profile.

If this is the first time that they used the client computer, and the roaming profile server is unavailable, the event log contains:

Type: Error
Event ID: 1000
Description: Windows cannot create profile directory directory name. You will be logged on with a local profile only.
             Changes to the profile will not be propagated to the server. Contact your network administrator. 

Source: Userenv
Type: Error
Event ID: 1000
Description: Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on using a temporary profile.
             Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.

After responding OK, the user receives a new local profile.

If the user logs on from a client that contains a cached copy of their profile, and the profile server is unavailable, they receive a message that their profile is unavailable and they are logged on with a cached copy of the profile. The event log contains:

Event ID: 1000
Description: Windows cannot create profile directory directory name. You will be logged on with a local profile only. 
             Changes to the profile will not be propagated to the server. Contact your network administrator.

The above messages should never be generated. When a user logs on over a slow link, no attempt should be made to retrieve a roaming profile, regardless of whether the profile server is available or not.
