The Windows 2000 Stand Port Monitor (SPM) is automatically installed when TCP/IP is installed.
When printing to a TCP/IP device, SPM uses SNMP to read the configuration of the target print device and to determine its' status. If SPM can't configure the print device using SNMP and the SPM default TCP ports, it will use the LPR protocol, if LPR is supported by the target device. The target device must be installed on an SPM port.
SPM uses port 9100 as the default destination port and will randomly select any open source port greater than 1023.
To install a SPM port on a Windows 2000 Print Server:
1. Start / Settings and double-click Printers or My Computer / Control Panel / Printers.
2. In the Printers folder, use the File menu and press Server Properties.
3. Select the Ports tab and press Add Port.
4. Select Standard TCP/IP Port in the Available port types box.
5. Press New Port and press Next.
6. Type the IP address or the Host Name of the target device. The port name will be filled in, but you can change it if you don't like the suggested name.
7. When you continue, SPM attempts to query and configure the device, based upon the SNMP responses. If the device responds with make, model, and options, the printer is automatically configured.
NOTE: Most Hewlett-Packard Jet Direct print servers work with SPM, using the 9100 port protocol.
NOTE: You can install Print Services for UNIX, from Other File and Print Services, and still have LPD/LPR.
