JSI Tip 3246. Device Manager issues error code 31 on your CD drives?

In tip 2930, I described how the Adaptec compact disc recordable (CD-R) plug-in for Windows Media Player 7.0 caused me to loose the ability to Eject my laptop from its' docking station.

If you receive a "Code 31" error on your CD drives in Device Manager, uninstall the plug-in. Then, use Regedt32 to navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Select\Default

    The Default data value determines which ControlSet will be current at the next boot
    (0x1 is ControlSet001, 0x2 is ControlSet002).

2. Navigate to:

     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet<nnn from step 1>\Control\Class\\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318\}

3. Delete UPPERFILTERS and LOWERFILTERS.

4. Exit Regedt32.

5. Shutdown and restart.
