JSI Tip 2031. WinNT Fault Tolerant sets rebuild during a Windows 2000 upgrade?.

During the upgrade of WinNT 4.0 that has:

1. Software Stripe set with Parity (Raid 5) and/or
2. Software Mirror (Raid 1)

the FT sets start to rebuild during the upgrade, slowing the upgrade process?

As part of the upgrade, the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Disk Key is extracted to a Migrate.inf file. Subsequently, the FT information is placed on a sector of each disk which is a FT member.

The only way to stop this additional disk activity, after the sectors are written, is to power the drives off, until the upgrade finishes.

NOTE: This new method of storing FT information allows you to move the FT set to another computer, where they are immediatley usable. No more manually rebuilding the Disk key.

NOTE: Volume sets and Stripe sets (Raid 0) are not affected.
