In Internet Service Manager (ISM), why do the public, Exchange, and Exadmin directories show an error status?

A. When you installed Exchange 2000, the system added three extra Microsoft IIS virtual directories whose content comes from the M drive (the Exchange store):

  • public
  • Exchange
  • Exadmin
When IIS starts, if the M drive isn't available, the system flags these three virtual directories with error icons (although you can still access them) and lists three 101 events in the Event log.

To remove the error flags, restart IIS. To avoid getting the error flags at each reboot, perform the following steps to make the Web service dependent on the Exchange Information Store (IS) service:

  1. Start regedt32.exe.
  2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\w3svc.
  3. Double-click DependOnService.
  4. On the first blank line, add the following text:

    MSExchangeIS

5. Click OK.
  6. Close regedt32.

Obviously, if you remove Exchange 2000 from the system, you must remove the service dependency on MSExchangeIS or the Web service won't start.
