How do I install Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 on Windows NT 4.0?

A. Before you install Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0, make sure that your system meets the following prerequisites:

• Your machine has Windows NT Server 4.0 installed.
• The server has at least two Network Interface Cards (NICs). One network card might be connected to your network; the second adapter could be a modem or ISDN port. The server can have only one NIC but will then function as an optional proxy (i.e., clients don't have to access the Internet through the server but instead use it as a caching proxy server).
• You are logged on as an Administrator account.
• TCP/IP is installed and configured.
• NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) is installed.
• Microsoft IIS 3.0 is installed and configured.
• You have an NTFS partition if you use Proxy caching.

After your system meets the criteria, you can install Proxy Server 2.0. To do so, complete the following steps:

1. Insert the Proxy Server 2.0 installation CD-ROM.
2. Start the Proxy Server 2.0 setup program (setup.exe in the MSPROXY directory).
3. In the first dialog box, click Continue.
4. Write down the displayed Product ID, and click OK.
5. To change the installation directory, click the Change Folder button and select the directory you wish to install Proxy Server 2.0 in (e.g., e:\msp). Click OK. To start the installation, click the large button.
6. Select the installation options you require. (The default settings include all options.) Click Continue.
7. The next dialog box is the caching dialog box. Check the Enable Caching box, and select a partition and the size. (You can select only NTFS partitions.) Click Set, and click OK.
8. Next, configure the Local Address Table (LAT) to specify which addresses are on your local network and which addresses you shouldn’t use on the Internet. Enter an address range (e.g., 200.200.200.1 to 200.200.200.255), and click Add. After you enter all the addresses, click Construct Table. Accept the defaults, and click OK. Click OK in the LAT dialog box.
9. Next configure the Proxy Server 2.0 client installation. By default, the installation program selects the current machine as the Computer name. You can check the Configure Web browsers to use Automatic Configuration to configure an automatic configuration script. Click OK.
10. Your last step is to choose whether you’ll use Access Control on the Winsock proxy service and the Web proxy service. By default, both services are enabled. Click OK.
11. The installation program then copies the Proxy Server 2.0 files to the machine.
12. Click OK in the Packet Filtering dialog box.
13. Click OK in the Proxy server installation complete dialog box.
