How do I add a newsgroup feed with Exchange 2000?

A. By default, when you install Exchange 2000, the system creates a default Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) virtual server. You can use this virtual server to house a feed from other newsgroups on the Internet to avoid the need for your intranet users to connect to outside news servers.

You can use this default NNTP virtual server to create feeds to a Public Folder for storage (Internet Newsgroups). For other storage media (either a file system or remote share), you must create a new virtual server.

  1. Start the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Exchange System Manager snap-in (Start, Programs, Microsoft Exchange, System Manager).
  2. Expand the Servers branch, Server name, Protocols, NNTP, Default NNTP Virtual Server, Feeds.
  3. Right-click and select New, Feed from the context menu.
  4. The feed wizard starts. The first dialog box requires the DNS name or IP address of the remote newsgroup server (e.g., msnews.microsoft.com). Click Next.
  5. Select the role of the server. Select Peer, and click Next.
  6. Ensure that Inbound feed is checked, with the "Pull articles from the remote server" option. Also check the Outbound feed option if you want to be able to send messages. Click Next.
  7. The wizard next asks from what date articles should be pulled. The default is current articles, but if you want older articles, change it and click Next.
  8. Select which newsgroups to pull. The default is all, so click Remove for this. Then click Add, type the name of the newsgroup you want to pull (e.g., microsoft.public.win2000.general), and click OK.
  9. Click Finish.

The system will display this new feed in the Feeds window. If you right-click the new feed, you can change its schedule for pulling articles (by default, every 15 minutes) using the Schedule tab.

You don't have to create the newsgroup before you create the feed (in the Newsgroups branch). The feed automatically creates the group. It might take some time for the system to create the groups, depending on the setting on the Schedule tab of the feed.

Be careful. When I selected newsgroups, I left the asterisk (*) for a general news server, and it created every Internet newsgroup on my server. I now have a chaotic configuration of public folders and newsgroups that I need to delete! I can't find a clean way to get rid of them because the folder is the default public folder/NNTP server, so I can't simply delete and recreate the store.
