February 2008 Reader Challenge and January Reader Challenge Winners

January 2008 Reader Challenge Winners

Congratulations to the winners of our January 2008 Reader Challenge. We had many winning entries, but unfortunately some of them were disqualified because of the lack of address and telephone data (so we couldn't send a prize). First prize, a copy of “Windows Vista in a Nutshell,” goes to Steve Powell, of Alabama. Second prize, a copy of “Windows Vista: The Definitive Guide,” goes to Jan-Juergen Eden, of Germany. Both books are from O'Reilly Media (www.ora.com).

February 2008 Reader Challenge

Solve this month's Vista Update challenge, and you might win a prize! Email your solution (don't use an attachment) to [email protected] by Feb. 14, 2008. You MUST include your full name, street mailing address (no P.O. Boxes), and a telephone number. Without that information, we can't send you a prize if you win, so your answer is eliminated, even if it’s correct. I choose winners at random from the pool of correct entries. I’m a sucker for humor and originality, and a cleverly written correct answer gets an extra chance. Because I receive so many entries each month, I can't reply to respondents, and I never respond to a request for an email receipt. Look for the solutions to this month's problem at http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/index.cfm?articleid=98223 on Feb. 15, 2008.

The February 2008 Challenge

System Restore (sometimes called System Recovery) first appeared in Windows ME, but it was rather shaky (as an editorial comment, I'll declare that Windows ME itself was rather shaky). The Windows XP version of System Restore was reliable and useful, and in Windows Vista this feature is even more robust. How much do you know about System Restore?

Question #1: System Restore includes data files in the restore point for:

A. Only Windows XP
B. Only Windows Vista
C. Both Windows XP and Windows Vista

Question #2: By default, all local hard drives are automatically monitored for creating restore points:

A. Only in Windows XP
B. Only in Windows Vista
C. In both Windows XP and Windows Vista

Question #3: You can change the amount of disk space allocated for system restore in the System Restore dialog box:

A. Only in Windows XP
B. Only in Windows Vista
C. In both Windows XP and Windows Vista

Again, to qualify you must email your solution (don't use an attachment) to [email protected] by Feb. 14, 2008. You MUST include your full name, street mailing address (no P.O. Boxes), and a telephone number. Without that information, we can't send you a prize if you win, so your answer is eliminated, even if it’s correct.

The Answers:

1: B
2: A (Windows Vista only monitors the system drive by default; you can add other local drives manually in the System Restore dialog box.)
3: A (In Windows Vista, you must make the change in the registry, not in the dialog box.)
