This week's questions cover topics for Exam 70-210: Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional.

Questions (July 26, 2002)

Question 1
Last year, Enrious bought a Windows 2000 Professional workstation, a Pentium II 350Mhz machine with 128MB or RAM, an EIDE hard disk, a Nvidia GeForce II graphics card, and a 100Mbps NIC. Recently, Enrious noticed that performance slows markedly when he runs resource-intensive applications. Over the course of a few days, Enrious runs several performance counters. The results are as follows:

  • LogicalDisk, % Free Space: 7%
  • Memory, Pages/Sec: 2
  • Physical Disk, % Disk Time: 5%
  • Processor, % Processor Time: 4%

Which of the following actions would most likely improve the performance of Enrious's workstation? (Choose the best answer.)

  1. Add a second CPU to the system.
  2. Increase the amount of RAM in the system.
  3. Run Disk Cleanup.
  4. Upgrade the hard disk to a SCSI hard disk.
  5. Increase the CPU priority for all applications.

Question 2
Oksana works for a company that plans to deploy 150 Windows 2000 Professional workstations on two floors of an office building. The company runs a Win2K Native Mode domain. Oksana is investigating whether she can use the Setup Manager tool to create scripts to support automated installations when deploying these 150 workstations. Which of the following installation types can she complete using an answer file that she created with Setup Manager? (Choose all that apply.)

  1. Windows 2000 Unattended Installation
  2. Sysprep Install
  3. AD Installation
  4. Terminal Services Installation
  5. Certificate Services Installation
  6. Remote Installation Services

Question 3
Kalu wants to track use of his Windows 2000 Professional graphics workstation. Kalu suspects that someone is logging on to the computer at night and looking at some of his confidential design proposals. Kalu has local administrator-level access on his machine. His workstation has two hard disks, one for the OS and programs and one for his graphics data.

Kalu uses local Group Policy to enable the auditing of object access. However, when he goes to the graphics data drive to specify which files and folders to audit, Kalu can't find an option to configure auditing. Which of the following is the most likely reason why Kalu can't properly set up auditing on his workstation? (Choose the best answer.)

  1. Kalu didn't enable process tracking. To track system activity such as file access, you must enable process tracking.
  2. Kalu didn't restart the system. You must restart a system before you enable auditing.
  3. Kalu didn't format the graphics data drive with NTFS. Drives must be NTFS to support auditing.
  4. Kalu enabled auditing at the local level. You must enable auditing at the domain level.
  5. Only domain administrators can enable auditing on Win2K Pro workstations.

Answers (July 26, 2002)

Answer to Question 1
The correct answer is C—Run Disk Cleanup. The performance test results indicate that processor speed, RAM, and hard disk I/O speed aren't issues on Enrious's system. However, the logical disk counter results indicate a dwindling amount of free space left on the hard disk. Running out of disk space on a Win2K system can cause performance problems. An easy way to make additional disk space available is to run the Disk Cleanup utility. The Disk Cleanup utility performs the following tasks to free space on your hard disk:

  • Removes temporary Internet files.
  • Removes any downloaded program files (ActiveX controls and Java applets you've downloaded from the Internet).
  • Empties the Recycle Bin.
  • Removes Win2K temporary files.
  • Removes Win2K components that you're not using.
  • Removes installed programs that you no longer use.

Answer to Question 2
The correct answers are A—Win2K Unattended Installation; B—Sysprep Install; and F—Remote Installation Services (RIS). When you run the Setup Manager Wizard, the wizard asks, "Which product does this answer file install?"

The possible answers are:

  • Windows 2000 Unattended Installation
  • Sysprep Install
  • Remote Installation Services

The Setup Manager application is available in the deploy.cab file on the Win2K OS CD-ROM's \Support\Tools folder. You can use a standard text editor to edit the text file that the Setup Manager application creates.

Answer to Question 3
The correct answer is C—Kalu didn't format the graphics data drive with NTFS. Drives must be NTFS to support auditing. To set up permissions and auditing for files and folders, you must use NTFS drives. If the drive is FAT or FAT32, you can't implement auditing. A FAT or FAT32 drive might also explain Kalu's security problems because you can't implement file and folder permissions on non-NTFS drives.
