A. Computer system manufacturers sometimes use the Sysprep utility to deploy systems. The manufacturer uses the utility to create an image of a complete system, then restores this image onto many systems for delivery to consumers. If the master system from which the image was made had an extra CD/DVD drive, the machines that the manufacturer copied the image onto will also display an icon for this device, even though the drive doesn't physically exist on those systems.
To remove the nonexistent device in Win2K, perform the following steps:
- Start the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Computer Management snap-in (go to Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, and click Computer Management).
- Expand Storage, Removable Storage, Physical Locations.
- Right-click the drive with the red X and select Delete.
