How can I control the modem speaker volume in Windows XP or Windows 2000?

A. You can use the modem properties to turn the modem speaker on or off. Alternatively, you can use a user initialization string to adjust this setting by performing the following steps:

  1. Start the Phone and Modem Options Control Panel applet (go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Phone and Modem Options).
  2. Select the Modems tab.
  3. Select the modem, and click Properties.
  4. Select the Advanced tab.
  5. Add one of the options from the table below to the initialization string, and click OK.
  6. Close the Control Panel applet.
