Recently, my NTbackup batch would hang while Preparing to backup using Volume Shadow Copy.
The only recent change I had made, on the two servers where this behavior was occurring, was to install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service (UPHClean). The backups on these servers are scheduled in the context of the logged on user.
To workaround this problem, I added a net stop UPHClean immediately before the NTbackup.exe command-line, and a net start UPHClean immediately after.
