JSI Tip 3172. How can I get NTBackup to use a non-supported device?

In tip 2849, I explained that NTBackup only backs up to devices that RSM supports.

You can, however, fake it out by backing up to a file on the unsupported device:

1. If you don't have a NIC, install the LoopBack adapter.

2. Create a share at the root of the media, calling it backup$.

3. In NTBackup, choose File in Backup media type.

4. In Backup media or file name, enter \\YourComputerName\Backup$\Date_Time_Description.bkf.

NOTE: See tip 3143.
