Halo: Spartan Assault Now Available for Xbox One

A great mobile game makes the transition to Microsoft's latest console

Well, it looks like a new "Halo" game is in fact heading to Xbox One this year. But it's not a full Halo 5 or whatever. Instead, Microsoft has simply ported its "Halo: Spartan Assault" mobile game—previously available on Windows Phone, Windows 8.1, and Xbox 360 to its latest console.

The good news? It's actually a pretty good game with a controller, though I still think it's better on multi-touch. In fact, it's one of the best games of the year on Windows Phone and Windows 8.1.

The better news? It's only $4.99 if you purchased the game previously on Windows Phone or Windows 8.1 (and using the same Microsoft account). You may recall there was some controversy when Microsoft forced users with both Windows Phone handsets and Windows 8.1 PCs and devices to buy the game twice. This time, you do have to buy it again, but the price is discounted: Those who never purchased this game before will pay the full price of $14.99.

Also good: As with "Halo: Spartan Assault" on other platforms, the Xbox One version of this game syncs your game position regardless of platform. So you could start a game session on the Xbox One and pick up where you left off on Windows Phone. Or vice versa.

One thing that doesn't work between platforms is multi-player: While both the Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions of the game do support cooperative multiplayer (with five new missions, no less) , you can only play against foes on the same console. Now that sounds like something that can be fixed, doesn't it?

"Halo: Spartan Assault" runs at 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution and 60 fps, which shouldn't surprise anyone. It's worth considering.
