Q. Is there a way to turn off my display from a desktop shortcut?

A. A free utility named Wizmo is available that can control various power attributes of a machine, including the monitor's powerstate. Using Wizmo, you can create a shortcut with the -monoff switch, which would allow you to turn off the monitor.

Other free utilities that turn off your display are available from the sites http://www.redmondpie.com/turn-off-your-notebook-lcd-with-one-click/ and http://users.telenet.be/jbosman/poweroff/poweroff.htm.
