Online Music Industry Tries to Invade Europe

In the January 21 edition of Connected Home EXPRESS, we reported that Napster was headed to Europe. However, the company appears to have hit some roadblocks. Complex licensing among European countries has complicated Napster's and Apple Computer's efforts to launch full music services abroad. The companies face the daunting task of dealing with differing music release dates and pricing structures in each country. Problems aside, Europe is the second largest music market behind the United States, but it has seen only limited music-download sales because of lack of availability. Napster complains that the longer it takes to resolve these licensing problems, the more difficult it will be to stop piracy. Whether this concern spurs the recording labels to make deals remains to be seen.
