JSI Tip 9564. Explorer.exe unexpectedly quits when you search for a file or folder in Windows XP or Windows Server 2003?

Prior to Windows Explorer quitting, you may notice that the Windows Explorer title bar disappears, your desktop is redrawn, and the title bar re-appears.

When you restart your computer, you receive:

Explorer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
We have created an error report that you can send to help us improve Explorer.exe. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous.

Explorer.exe 6.0.3790.1830 rkadmin.dll 1.0.0.10 0000d8d9

This behavior will occur if you install the Windows 2000 Resource kit, because the Rkadmin.dll file is copied to the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.

To resolve this problem, uninstall the Windows 2000 Resource Kit.

NOTE: If desired, after uninstalling the Windows 2000 Resource Kit, you may install the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit tools.
