JSI Tip 8056. When you press Eject PC on your Windows XP portable, you occasionally receive 'You cannot eject your computer because ...'?

When you press Eject PC to undock your Windows XP portable from a docking station or port replicator, you sometimes receive:

You cannot eject your computer because one of the devices in the docking station, <A hardware component>, cannot be stopped because a program is still assessing it.

NOTE: <A hardware component> is connected to the docking station or port replicator. It can be an ECP printer port, a printer, a Pocket PC device, or any other USB device.

When you press Eject PC, the Plug and Play manager notifies programs and drivers to close their open handles to the devices in the docking station or port replicator. When these programs and drivers respond, the Plug and Play manager checks to insure that a zero open handle count exists. If a non-zero handle count is returned, the Plug and Play manager assumes that a program still has an open handle to the <A hardware component> device, and denies the eject request.

If Microsoft determines that this is a Windows XP or Microsoft driver problem, it will be addressed in a future service pack and/or hotfix and/or driver update.
