If you press the ESC key while your computer is starting, and you have a PS/2 device or the BIOS translates previous USB/HIB scan codes to NTLDR, your computer may pause on a black screen.
The boot loader checks for F5 and F8 key presses during startup. These keys are represented as an ARC sequence in the internal buffer. The first byte of this ARC sequence is the same as the ESC key, which causes the the boot process to stop on the black screen.
To resume the startup process, press any key.
Windows XP Service Pack 1 fixes this problem, but as of Service Pack 3, there is no fix for Windows 2000.
