JSI Tip 5933. Windows XP does NOT recognize a USB storage device after you resume from standby?

If you perform the following procedure, your USB storage device may NOT be recognized when you resume from Standby:

1. Plug the device into a USB port on the computer.

2. Put the computer into Standby.

3. Unplug the device while the computer is in Standby and plug it into a different USB port.

4. Resume from Standby.

You notice that Device Manager has an exclamation point in a yellow circle, with a status of Code 42 (duplicate device), next to the device.

This problem is likely to occur on a Windows XP computer that has multiple USB controllers.

To workaround this problem, plug the USB storage device into the original port. After Windows recognizes the device, you can try to change ports.
