JSI Tip 5713. Windows XP SP1 can enable support for hard drives that exceed 137GB?

After you apply SP1 for Windows XP, you can manually enable support for hard drives that exceed 137GB, if:

- You have a 48-bit LBA compatible BIOS.

- You have a hard disk with a capacity that is greater than 137GB.

If you DO NOT meet these requirements, you will likely trash your entire system by implementing this tip.

To enable 48-bit LBA support:

1. Use the Registry Editor to navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters.

2. Add Value Name EnableBigLba, a REG_DWORD data type, and set the data value to 1.

3. Restart Windows XP.

NOTE: DO NOT install any previous operating system on a disk created using this tip, as data loss will occur.
