The Windows XP Recovery Console
Bootcfg command can edit or create a boot.ini file.
It can scan you hard drives for Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 (NT 5.0), and Windows XP (NT 5.1)
,and
update boot.ini, or recreate a missing one.
The /add switch scans for all versions of Windows NT and displays the result:

The /default switch automatically selects a new default selection.
The /rebuild switch is similar to the /add switch:
