JSI Tip 4057. How can I tell if I started Windows 2000 in Safe Mode versus Safe Mode with Networking?

In tip 2038, I described the Windows 2000 Safe Boot modes.

It is fairly obvious what Safe Boot mode you started when you selected Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

To determine which Safe Mode you started, you can open a CMD prompt and inspect the Safeboot_Option environment variable:

- If you did NOT start is a Safe Mode, the environment variable is undefined.

- If you started in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Command Prompt, the Safeboot_Option environment variable is set to Minimal.

- If you started in Safe Mode with Networking, the Safeboot_Option environment variable is set to Network.

NOTE: See tip 2319 » How can I automate a Safe-mode boot?

NOTE: See tip 4056 » What drivers and services will be started when using a Safe Boot?
