JSI Tip 1189. File locked while applying a Service Pack?.

If update issues a message that a file cannot be replaced because it is currently locked, do NOT skip the file. Depending on the file involved, you may not be able to successfully reboot and run Windows NT.

The proper steps to resolved this problem are:

1. Abort the update. Do NOT reboot.

2. Restart the update, choose to uninstall (from the Uninstall folder you just created).

NOTE: If you didn't create an Uninstall directory, use your ERD to restore the system.

3. Before re-running update, stop all programs and non-essential services. You may have to use Kill from the Resource Kit to abort the process that is locking the file.
