This Week in "Windows 8.1 Book"

This Week in "Windows 8.1 Book"

A great leap into the publishing unknown

With "Windows 8.1 Book" moving to its own web site, I want to make sure SuperSite readers still stay up to date with what's happening with this title. Here's a recap of the past week on the Windows 8.1 Book web site.

Windows 8.1 Book + Kindle

I've received a few questions already about the best way to read "Windows 8.1 Book" on Kindle.

The best Kindle experience at the moment is with an e-ink-based Kindle e-book reader like the Kindle Paperwhite. (This will change when we release the native Kindle version of "Windows 8.1 Book") For these devices, you should download the Mobi version of the book. That's because Mobi (and ePub) offer dynamic layouts and font sizes, whereas the PDF is a fixed format, where every page is like an image file.

Why $2?

So far, the single most common question we've received about the book is about the price. Why did we price the book at $2? Some have argued for a higher price, for example. But this is really about accessibility. We want "Windows 8.1 Book" to be a no-brainer.

Install 0.4 and Book 0.12

Here's a minor update to the Install chapter with some changes and updates based on feedback. When I posted the first draft version of this chapter, I noted there would be further updates, and this is just one of them.

Personalize 0.1

Here's a first look at the next chapter in progress for Windows 8.1 Book: Personalize. This chapter will eventually offer a comprehensive look at how you can personalize Windows 8.1 to your own liking. This first pass includes only a few sections, however, and doesn't yet have the full content list.

Quick status update

Here's a quick status update on the book and the site. First of all, thanks very much to everyone who has paid for the book. This is much appreciated, and in case it's not obvious, not something we've gone into lightly. In fact, it's a very strange thing asking to be paid. It shouldn't be, but it is.

Welcome to Windows 8.1 Book!

Welcome to the web site for "Windows 8.1 Book" (final name to be determined), a full-length e-book that we are currently writing about Windows 8.1. This is in many ways a spiritual update to Windows 8 Secrets, our previous book. But this time, we're doing things differently.
