Apple will take its first steps in a corporate reshaping when it lays off 5,000 employees next week in an effort to return to profitability. Additionally, many products such as the Pippin set-top box and the MessagePad "PDA" will be eliminated. Apple will restructure the company to focus on specialized, high-margin products, including desktop publishing systems, portable computers, and Web servers. It will target the high-end publishing, education, scientific and engineering, portable computer, and Web server markets.
Apple will also start charging for the MacOS, doubling the price in certain markets
