In the Windows 10 Anniversary Update you have the capability to select the default storage location for several data types that you manage on your device.
The benefit of this is that by storing these files on a secondary hard drive or storage card your important data is stored separate from your Windows OS drive in case you have a corrupted drive or any other hardware issues with your main hard drive.
This features also comes in very handy for anyone using a low storage device like a tablet with less than 32GB of storage as it keeps more free space available on your main hard drive.
Here is how you access and change those storage settings.
Step One: Open the Storage Settings Page
Open the Windows Settings app and then click/tap on System and then Storage.
Step Two: Select a default storage location for individual data types
On this page you will see a listing of the storage spaces that are available on your system.
Below that under the Save locations header there is an entry for each of the data types you can select an alternate storage location for.
That list of data types includes:
- Apps
- Documents
- Music
- Photos and Videos
- Movies and TV
You can change the default storage location for any combination of these data types by just clicking/tapping on the drop down selection under each one and selecting the storage location.
Once you are done you can close the Windows Settings app.
Note: This setting page will only display storage locations that can be used for these options.
