Microsoft ramps up for 'Windows Millennium'

I've been getting emails all day from excited beta testers who have been invited to join the next Consumer Windows beta, code-named "Windows Millennium." This new Windows operating system, due for release in late 2000, will follow Windows 98 SE into the consumer market while Windows 2000, due this October, is aimed at the corporate crowd. Whether Windows Millennium is the final name of the product is unclear.

In fact, details about Windows Millennium are pretty scarce right now. Rumors have it that the new Windows will shield the user from much of the system's complexity through an HTML-based user interface. Regardless of how the new OS comes together, one thing is certain: Simplicity is the key. I'll have more details on Windows Millennium as they become available.
