Compaq buys Tandem

Compaq is paying $3 billion to buy Tandem Computer Corporation, giving the company access to Tandem's high-end servers and corporate accounts. Under terms of the deal, announced this morning, Tandem will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Compaq and will retain its core management team. Tandem is a big player in online transaction applications for major banks and it is undergoing a switch from proprietary systems to Windows NT
