Here's another issue (or non-issue, depending on how you view it) identified today that can cause Windows 8.1 Update 1 to fail during installation.
Confirmed by a community member on the NT System Admin Issues email list, a particular user would move or remove certain OS installed Start Menu folders to organize them due to personal preference. And, apparently, this had been performed on many computers in the organization. The ones in this case were:
- %AllUsersProfile% \Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools (Displays in 8.1 GUI as "Windows System")
- %AllUsersProfile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools
Simply recreating both folders as they were originally installed allowed KB2919355 to install successfully for all "affected" systems. Obviously, users should be able to modify the OS to their taste, so it's strange that these folder locations would be required for KB2919355 to install correctly.
