WinInfo Short Takes: Week of February 21

IF YOU'RE RUNNING Windows 2000, check out Windows Update today, as Microsoft has released a couple of new updates, including a new version of Windows Critical Update. Also of interest is two generically named "Windows 2000 Updates" which include the first monthly (woo!) compatibility update package and an Iomega tools update for parallel port drives.

OK, WINDOWS 2000 is out. Now make yourself a promise: Before you even think about upgrading, you'll ensure that your hardware and software will work. Check the HCL. Read the Windows 2000 FAQ, technology showcases and reviews on my SuperSite for Windows. And for crying out loud, back up your data. Please.

Now that Windows 2000 is finally shipping, Windows 2000-compatible drivers should start appearing. And some that I've been waiting for personally have shown up right on schedule: 3dfx is shipping a new Voodoo3 2000/3000 driver for Windows 2000and Creative Labs has shown up with a wide range of Windows 2000 drivers, including 3D Blaster GeForce Pro, GeForce, RIVA TNT2 Ultra, RIVA TNT2, and more. Looking for more drivers? Check out the excellent NT Compatible Web site.

THE COMPUTER TRADE press cracks me up sometimes, and I guess I make that pretty clear. Reading articles earlier this week about Visual Studio 7, I was surprised by the number of people that reported that the new suite was due by the end of the year. This is not, and never was, the case: Visual Studio 7 won't ship until early 2001, as previously reported in WinInfo. So today I see a story from one of these other unnamed news agencies reporting that Visual Studio 7 is now "delayed" until 2001. Riiiggghhhhttttt
