Newsflash: Fiorina Ousted from HP

Controversial HP CEO Carly Fiorina has been ousted by the company's board of directors and will leave HP immediately. Carly spearheaded HP's disastrous mega-merger with Compaq and grabbed 15 minutes of fame last year by signing a painfully one-sided deal with Apple Computer to license that company's iPod MP3 player.
"While I regret the board and I have differences about how to execute HP's strategy, I respect their decision," Fiorina wrote in a statement issued this morning. "HP is a great company and I wish all the people of HP much success in the future." The differences she refers to are likely related to discussions within the company about a possible corporate split along two or three product lines. Fiorina has publicly said in the past that the company had seriously considered splitting up HP on three separate occasions but had ultimately decided against it.
Fiorina's troubles at HP came to a head earlier this year when the company admitted that it would be unable to sustain a financially devastating market-share battle with Dell. After trying for 2 years to wrest the largest-PC-maker crown from Dell, HP finally announced that it would instead seek to make its PC business smaller but more profitable. HP has named chief financial officer (CFO) Robert Wayman as interim CEO while the company looks for a full-time replacement. Wayman will retain his CFO title during this period.

Microsoft Issues Massive Number of Security Fixes

Yesterday, as promised, Microsoft issued a massive number of security bulletins and fixes as part of its regularly scheduled monthly security update release schedule. The company released 12 security bulletins for various products, including several Windows versions, Microsoft Exchange Server, Office XP, Windows Media Player (WMP), MSN Messenger, and Windows SharePoint Services (WSS). Eight of the bulletins are rated critical, the company's most serious rating.
"Microsoft is committed to delivering security updates on a predictable and consistent monthly schedule," a company representative said yesterday. "As we do every month, Microsoft will hold a technical Webcast on Wednesday morning to discuss this month's updates. This Wednesday's Webcast has been extended to last for 2 hours." You can sign up for the security Webcast on the Microsoft Web site.

The eight critical security bulletins include fixes for the Licensing Logging Service in Windows; the Windows Server Message Block (SMB) service; the OLE and COM technologies in Windows, Exchange Server, and Office; the Dynamic HTML (DHTML) Editing Component ActiveX Control in Windows; Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE); the Hyperlink Object Library in Windows; Office XP; and the PNG processing facility in Windows, WMP, and MSN Messenger. You can download these and the other updates issued yesterday from the Microsoft Security Web site.

RC2-O-Rama: Microsoft Ships Near-Final Versions of Windows Server 2003 SP1,

Windows 2003 x64 Edition, and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Yesterday, Microsoft finalized the Release Candidate 2 (RC2) code for three products: Windows 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows 2003 x64 Edition, and XP Pro x64 Edition. Each of these RC builds includes performance, stability, and security enhancements when compared with previous builds, as well as minor feature changes, Microsoft tells me.
Windows 2003 SP1 RC2 is now available as a public download, but the two x64 products are available only to beta testers for now. All three products are expected to ship in final form by late March.
The x64 versions of Windows 2003 and XP Pro are designed to run on PC and server systems based on AMD 64 and Intel's Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T) microprocessors, which combine the compatibility of the 32-bit x86 platform with the advanced memory capabilities of 64-bit systems. To help auger in the new era of x64 hardware, Microsoft will begin accepting submissions for the Windows 2003 x64 and XP x64 "Designed for Windows" logo program. The company would like device makers and PC makers to qualify their products for the logo so that customers can identify which products will work with the new systems. I'll be reviewing Windows 2003 SP1, Windows Server x64, and XP x64 on the SuperSite for Windows soon.
