Scaling back its plans for a full-scale Service Pack 1 release, Microsoft will instead make its first Windows 98 upgrade--which consists of various multimedia programs--available via Windows Update beginning August 18th, according to reports in InfoWorld, news.com and other Web-based computer news organizations. The release has been repositioned as a "multimedia enhancement" pack rather than a Service Pack because it doesn't address any bugs but rather adds new features.
According to the reports, the update will include DirectX 6.0, Microsoft Media Player 5.2, new Web fonts, Microsoft Chat 2.5, and WebTV Guide with Gemstar support
