Windows 98 Service Pack 1 components now available

If you're using Windows 98 and don't want to upgrade to Windows 98 SE but do want the bug fixes that are included in the newer release, your salvation has arrived: Microsoft has posted the components of Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows 98 to its Web site, set of separate downloads that include three Year 2000 fixes, Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2, an updated Java virtual machine and an important 1 MB "System Update" that includes numerous networking, security, and accessibility fixes.

Ostensibly, these fixes are available now from the Windows Update Web site. However, since I have no way to verify this, I do know that they are also available from the "Download Windows Updates" page on the Microsoft Web site.

If you'd rather receive the SP1 fixes on CD, you can order a $5.00 SP1 CDROM from Microsoft or get the fixes as part of the $20 SE Updates CDROM, which updates your Windows 98 system to Windows 98 S
