Why does my system crash and display error 0x00000054 on a blue screen?

A. You might receive this error message when you assign a drive letter to an unformatted drive partition. However, depending on your configuration, your machine might automatically reboot before you can diagnose the problem. Regardless of whether your machine reboots, you can view the error in the event log, which will contain the following information:

   Event Type: Information
   Event Source: Save Dump
   Event Category: None
   Event ID: 1001
   Description: The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. 
   The bugcheck was: 0x00000054 (0x003612ca, 0xf2688d00, 0x00000000,
   0x00000000). 

To resolve this error, perform one of the following actions:

  • Use the Disk Management component of Windows 2000's Computer Management Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in to delete the unformatted partition.
  • Use the Disk Management component of Win2K's Computer Management MMC snap-in to format the partition.
  • Use the Disk Management component of Win2K's Computer Management MMC snap-in to remove the drive letter.
