Use FCI to Classify Non-Local Data?

Q: Can File Classification Infrastructure classify data that isn't local to the file server?

A. The File Classification Infrastructure (FCI) component of File Server Resource Manager classifies data based on a set of defined rules, and then can perform tasks based on the data's classification.

FCI can work only on volumes that are seen as local storage to the server, such as direct attached storage and volumes mounted from a SAN. Remote storage such as that accessed via SMB can't be classified by using FCI.
